The Portrait Project: Looking at drawing, colour and composition - Thursdays 930-12pm 23rd July to 10th September
Set on a beautiful 3 acre property just 4 minutes drive from Yandina, students will enjoy creating under a shaded area amongst nature.
Term 3 on Thursdays is an 8 week term of art classes running in Ninderry every Thursday from 930am to 12pm
TERM 3: PORTRAITS IN COLOUR
8-Week Art Course

This term we will continue exploring the fascinating world of portraiture, learning how to capture personality, expression and likeness while developing confidence with colour and composition. Students may work in their medium of choice, including acrylics, watercolour, coloured pencil, pastel, mixed media or oils. We will also look at tacklking a larger artwork than Term 2.
WEEK 1: UNDERSTANDING THE FACE
Study facial proportions, structure and features
Explore how artists throughout history have approached portraiture
Practice drawing facial features individually
Create preliminary portrait sketches
WEEK 2: EXPRESSIONS AND PERSONALITY
Learn how expressions communicate mood and character
Explore angles, poses and viewpoints
Complete a series of quick portrait studies
Begin planning a larger portrait project
WEEK 3: INTRODUCING COLOUR
Explore basic colour theory and skin tones
Learn how light affects colour within the face
Experiment with colour mixing in your chosen medium
Create colour portrait studies
WEEK 4: BACKGROUNDS AND COMPOSITION
Learn how backgrounds can tell a story and enhance a portrait
Explore colour relationships between subject and background
Experiment with pattern, texture, symbolism and abstract elements
Develop concepts for a final portrait
WEEK 5: BUILDING THE PORTRAIT
Transfer and refine portrait drawings
Establish background elements and colour schemes
Begin work on the final portrait
Focus on structure, proportion and placement
WEEK 6: DEVELOPING DEPTH AND CHARACTER
Explore layering, blending and mark-making techniques
Refine facial features and likeness
Strengthen contrast, light and shadow
Continue work on final portrait
WEEK 7: DETAILS AND FINISHING TECHNIQUES
Add highlights, accents and finishing details
Refine background elements to support the portrait
Explore edges, texture and focal points
Individual feedback and guidance
WEEK 8: COMPLETION AND CELEBRATION
Complete final portraits
Learn presentation and finishing techniques
Group discussion and reflection on creative growth
Celebrate each student's unique artistic style and achievements
My art classes are designed to create a supportive and inspiring environment where students can develop skills while exploring their own creativity. Guidance is provided through demonstrations, individual instruction and encouragement, while allowing each artist the freedom to experiment, make discoveries and develop their own unique artistic voice.
